When analysing language ask yourself.
1. What is
the technique used? (Name or describe the technique)
2. How is the technique used? (Describe how
the author employs the technique, include quote)
3. Why has the technique been used? (How and
why does the PLT position the reader)
4. Where
you could answer the why and expand upon your answer (Ask Why, Why, Why)
First
Draft
Nguyen uses a anecdote to open her piece. The use of the anecdote,
saying she is the ‘daughter of two incredibly hardworking’ parents she makes people think
that she is aware of the issue and that she knows what she is talking
about.
Second
Draft
Nguyen begins her piece with an anecdote. By placing herself
as ‘the daughter’ of ‘hardworking’ Vietnamese immigrants she establishes the
validity of her position. This could position
former asylum seekers to reflect on their own experiences. The reader
could be encouraged to come to the realization that as a former asylum seeker
Nguyen is representative of the plight of the voiceless contemporary
asylum seekers.

Nguyen opens her piece by reflecting on an
anecdote. By placing herself as ‘the daughter’ of ‘hardworking’ Vietnamese
immigrants she establishes the validity of her position. Former asylum seekers may be positioned to reflect on their own
experiences in arriving here and the violence and subjugation they were forced
to endure. Former asylum seekers may
come to the realization that as a former asylum seeker Nguyen who has
experienced ‘a state of horror’ she understands the subtle issues facing such people and thus could
be representative of the plight of the voiceless contemporary asylum seekers
and this lends further credibility to
Nguyen’s argument.
